The water went under that bridge when patriotism was detached from the land and reattached to the proposition nation of the United States.

The term "working-class American . ." shows just how far we have drifted from concrete reality where working class is qualifying American because the cohesive homogeneity of the land from sea to sea is simply assumed in common parlance.
