The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged

Steve Hayes quotes Jeffrey Turner on the "two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life" — Fantasy literature: "One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." I owned both but only read the one.

Amen to that! Tolkien's world causes one to embrace the Permanent Things. Rand's simply leads one deep into the libertarian delusion.
