Do the Quran and the Hadith Sanction the Death Penalty for Apostasy?

"The killing of apostates is not prescribed in any verse of the Quran," writes Abdullah Saeed — The faith which it is death to leave? — who, later noting that while "[t]he hadith, sayings of the Prophet Muhammed not recorded in the Quran, are often cited in support of killing apostates," argues, "This is based on a serious misunderstanding" — The faith which it is death to leave (2).
