Antichrist or Vicar of Christ?

There are many, many reasons to oppose this candidate, but her former membership in the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) is not one of them — Michele Bachmann's Church Says the Pope Is the Antichrist.

Full disclosure, this blogger was raised in the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. I was never taught that the Pope was the Antichrist, but perhaps I should have been. I mean, anyone claiming to be the Vicar of Christ either is what he says he is or is seriously evil. The only other possibility is that he is seriously deluded.

Bachman's church is heretical, and if it does in fact claim that the pope is the antichrist, it is blasphemous as well. So what? The proper test for her fitness for office in this regard is simple: will she uphold, defend & protect the Constitution of the United States? Will she defend the religious liberty of all the citizens, including Roman Catholics or other religious believers with whom she may disagree? That's the test. Any any politician can pass the test, regardless of their own religious beliefs or lack thereof. An atheist could pass that test.

That doesn't mean I plan on voting for Bachmann. That one test isn't the only test. But in terms of her own religious beliefs disqualifying her for office, if she is committed to the Constitution and will apply it evenhandedly with a commitment to defending the liberty of all Americans, then her own personal views shouldn't be a problem.

You are absolutely right that "any politician can pass the test, regardless of their own religious beliefs or lack thereof."

Does Michele Bachmann believe that the Papacy is the Antichrist? What if she does? Considering the claims that it makes, then, while individual Popes might be and have been chartatans or lunatics, the institution itself is either telling the truth in making those claims, or else it is indeed the Antichrist.

So, who will call good evil by pointing to the Papacy's defence and promotion of metaphysical realism, Biblical historicity, credal and Chalcedonian orthodoxy, the sanctity of human life, Biblical standards of sexual morality, social justice, and peace, and then saying, "Behold, the Antichrist"?
