Johnson on Johnson

Sheila K. Johnson remembers her late, great husband, whose work examined "the choice between republic and empire" and how "our imperial dreams stretch our means to the breaking point and threaten our future" — Chalmers Johnson vs. the Empire. Of "the alternatives available to us as a nation," he said, "we are choosing what I call the suicide option."

(Parenthetically, she recalls before meeting him that she "was a 19-year-old junior at the University of California, Berkeley, 'shacked up' with a boyfriend," and says, "Even in those early days of 'free love,' I’d concluded that for women the price was too high.")
