  • "The best movie depiction of how terrifying it is to be swept up in a tidal wave that I've ever seen is the opening of the recent Clint Eastwood movie Hereafter, which will be out on DVD next Tuesday," says Steve Sailer, linking to a really scary video clip — What it's like to be swept away by a tsunami.

  • Manual Lora reports that one of the most widely-held bits of false knowledge has again reared its ugly head — ‘The Earthquake and Tsunami Will Stimulate the Economy’ and ‘Tsunami an Economic Disaster? Not Necessarily’ — and Butler Shaffer notes that this time it came from an "expert" who "got his PhD from Harvard; was president of Harvard; former official of the World Bank; Secretary of the Treasury under Clinton; [and] Director of the National Economic Council under Obama" — Broken Windows and Wealth.

I was impressed by Team Rubicon, a charity that specializes in getting disaster relief into remote, dangerous places. After the Pakistan floods, they motored around the back country, getting blankets, medicine and water purification to people and speeding away before the Taliban could kill them.

They announced yesterday that they would not be deploying to Japan, as Japan was rich, accessible, prepared, and had many sources of aid to call on. I congratulated them for not trying to re-invent the wheel.

That is a wise decision. Thanks for introducing me to Team Rubicon, which seems like a serious operation.
