The Orphans of Ishinomaki

"The wave hit the northeastern town as parents came to collect their children from Kama Elementary School but while many were saved, 30 children between eight and 12 years old remain in their classroom, silently playing games as they wait – possibly in vain – to be collected" — Sitting Silent in Their Classroom.

A week ago, when the news was first coming in, I remember reading about "a schoolboy who was swept away" — Death toll to rise. These individual stories capture the horror far better than numbers. Monster though he may have been, Jospeh Stalin was right when he said, "One death is a tragedy; one million is a statistic."
