The Fall of Kim Dong-Sung

I've never much cared for short-track speed-skating, but I've harbored some antipathy toward the above athlete who, during his victory lap, threw down his own national flag in reaction to being disqualified, thus unleashing a wave of South Korean anti-Americanism in 2002, so I confess to feeling a bit of Schadenfreude reading this news — U.S. Speedskating suspends Kim Dong-Sung from coaching in wake of corporal punishment accusations.

Of course, I feel first for the kids; keep your Korean corporal punishment at home, Mr. Kim! But I can't help but think back to the events of 2002, which I remember watching live on TV. I was disgusted by the rabid nationalism of his flag-waving victory lap, but even more by his flag-desecrating temper tantrum. A patriot would have done neither.
