The Real Counter-Culture

"When popular culture is relentlessly permissive and debauched, the only true rebellion is to exhibit self-denial and fearsome wholesomeness," begins Andy Nowicki — Defiant Chastity.

The author continues, "In spite of these undeniable contemporary circumstances, most kids today still choose to 'rebel' by being utterly conformist in mindset and behavior; they show their supposed 'individuality' and freedom from society’s constraints, that is, by doing exactly what the culture instructs them to do."

Yup, and this is why culture counts, and the norms that culture imposes should not be underestimated. The Church has historically understood this quite well. And the culture will inevitably be supported in the public square by laws that reflect the underlying presumptions and ideas found within that culture. This truth has always struck me as the fundamental weakness of libertarianism -- the failure to recognize that culture will inevitable affect the laws of a given polity.
