"Are we ashamed of our Christian identity?" asks France’s Minister of European Affairs Laurent Wauquiez — EU diary includes Muslim, Hindu, Jewish festivities, but no Christmas or Easter.

"Are we ashamed that the Europe of church towers was the base of our European identity?" he continued. In one corner of the continent, they are not ashamed, and are resisting — Croats ask the Virgin Mary to save them from the EU.

The notion that Europe has a "Christian identity" makes it easier to attribute some of the excesses of Europeans to Christianity.
