Patrick J. Buchanan Asks

"Why are we importing a million-plus workers a year when 17 million Americans can't find work?" — Is This Our America Anymore?

"Why do we not declare a moratorium on all immigration, until our unemployment rate falls to 6 or 5 percent? Charity begins at home. Ought we not take care of our own jobless first before we invite in strangers to take their jobs?"

I am myself a supporter of unrestricted immigration; in the time of Christ there was no such thing as a legal immigrant, and we were told to shelter and protect foreigners.

That being said, the amount of people leaving to work in the US has certainly dropped since 2008, and I personally know several who came back to my country -- some legal, some illegal -- and I really think that, as US economy languishes, the trend is for these returns to increase.

Finally, lest someone accuse me of liking pepper on other people's eyes, I'm totally in favour of liberalising my country's immigration policy, too -- Lots of Colombians and Bolivians come work here as illegal immigrants, and I certainly don't feel like it is our right to turn them away.
