Michael Prätorius' Es Ist Ein Ros' Entsprungen Performed by Mainzer Domchor Directed by Mathias Breitschaft

The Second Sunday of Advent is celebrated tomorrow, and Michael Praetorius' 1609 setting of the ancient Es ist ein Ros entsprungen is the hymn of the season:
    Es ist ein' Ros' entsprungen,
    aus einer Wurzel zart.
    Wie uns die Alten sungen,
    von Jesse war die Art.
    Und hat ein Blüm'lein 'bracht;
    mitten im kalten Winter,
    wohl zu der halben Nacht.

    Das Röslein, das ich meine,
    davon Jesaia sagt:
    ist Maria die Reine
    die uns das Blümlein bracht.
    Aus Gottes ew'gem Rat,
    Hat sie ein Kind geboren,
    Und blieb ein reine Magd.

    Das Blümelein, so kleine,
    das duftet uns so süß;
    mit seinem hellen Scheine
    vertreibt's die Finsternis.
    Wahr'r Mensch und wahrer Gott!
    Hilft uns aus allem Leide,
    rettet von Sünd' und Tod.

    Lo, how a rose e'er blooming,
    From tender stem hath sprung.
    Of Jesse's lineage coming,
    As men of old have sung;
    It came, a flow'ret bright,
    Amid the cold of winter,
    When halfspent was the night.

    Isaiah 'twas foretold it,
    The Rose I have in mind,
    With Mary we behold it,
    The virgin mother kind;
    To show God's love aright,
    She bore to men a Savior,
    When halfspent was the night.

    O Flower, whose fragrance tender
    With sweetness fills the air,
    Dispel with glorious splendour
    The darkness everywhere;
    True man, yet very God,
    From Sin and death now save us,
    And share our every load.

Speaking of poetry, I don't have much time to blog these days, but would like to still be involved in blogging. So I have started a blog with English translations of Classical Chinese poems by Korean authors.

I've always been a fan of Praetorius' rendering of this song.

I played this video last night, thanks to your post. And then to my delight it was played at Sunday Mass as the post-Communion hymn!
