Why Did Tim Serwinowski Die?

The Buffalonian's father deserves an answer to that question — Son’s death in war leaves bitter taste. "I am 100 percent respectful of our military," said Phil Serwinowski. "But I don’t want one more family to go through what we are going through. For what? There is nothing there but opium.

"I don’t feel any safer because we are there," the father continued. "What we are doing in Afghanistan is not stopping any [terrorist attack] from happening here."

Two weeks before he died, Tim Serwinowski wrote in his journal, "I hate this place and [everybody] in it . . . Things aren’t any worse here now than they were before the Taliban." Said his father, "I wish someone [in Washington] had the courage to say, 'Let’s get out of there.' What right do we have to tell people in another country how to live?"
