The Former Apostolic Vicar of Arabia

From a reader comes this "interview with Giovanni Bernardo Gremoli, Apostolic Vicar of Arabia for twenty nine years, with jurisdiction over all the Catholics in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and the Yemen," who says that "In the light of my experience any attitude aimed at exacerbating the confrontation between the West and the Islamic world is useless and dangerous" — A Catholic bishop in the cradle of Islam — and also the same bishop's appreciation of "the wise and enlightened leadership of President Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan" of the United Arab Emirates — He knew how to say wonderful things about the cooperation between Christians and Muslims. "I still remember the words that the Sheikh addressed to us on the occasion of a meeting with him: «I always want you Fathers to wear your religious habit so that everyone knows that you are men of God and all must respect you»."

I've read accounts from that the American embassy hostages held in Iran who were religious were afforded more respect by the Iranians than those who weren't.

That's an illustrative account. If they hate us for our freedoms, it's not for our freedom of religion, but maybe for our supposed freedom from religion.

Of course, they hate us for our foreign policy, or, as Osama bin Laden noted, they would have attacked Sweden. When I pointed this fact out, I was attacked by neocons.
