Whereas in comparison here, when looking at the local art galleries and museums, the best democracy seems to have done a splendid job of it.

But it's even more than that. Look at the settings. The wide urban pavered walkway has virtually ceased to exist except as a tourist attraction.

A bit haunting. I like the ones you've picked out: the dancers and the streetscape--they're so different from the Nork propoganda art I've seen before. The latter looks so like the neighbourhood right outside the gates of Fudan University in northern Shanghai where I took a short Mandarin course.
