Papal Respect

In the form of "a letter to the pope thanking him for opposing a Florida pastor's threat to burn the Quran and calling for cooperation against secularism" — Pope has received letter from Ahmadinejad. The letter blamed "secularism, Western extremist humanism and the man's growing tendency toward material life" for the "decline of human society, stating, "Close cooperation and interaction among divine religions to halt such destructive moves is an absolute necessity."

Of course, this "is not the first missive between Iran's hardline president and the pontiff." Three years ago, you read on the pages, "Iranian officials [were] quietly laying the groundwork necessary to turn to Pope Benedict XVI and top Vatican diplomats for mediation if the showdown with the United States should escalate toward a military intervention" — Iran's Secret Weapon: The Pope.

I've always wondered if it was more than a coincidence that the child abuse scandal broke at the same moment the US was gearing up for war in Iraq.

The one force in the world which could have played a moral check against the war was silenced.

I wondered the same thing -- Are the Attacks on the Pope a Prelude to Attacks on Iran?
