Time to Retire the Nobel Peace Prize

Another politicized award this year — China's Liu Xiaobo wins Nobel Peace Prize. Oslo has to be given credit for giving the award to a "chain-smoking Chinese dissident," especially after awarding the prize to another smoker last year. I would have thought smokers too politically incorrect to receive any honor.

That said, not to take away from Mr. Liu's "long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights," but Beijing is absolutely right that "the honor should have gone to someone focused on promoting international friendship and disarmament." Shouldn't the prize be given to the man who "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses," as its founder intended? Then again, is there anyone working "for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses" any more?
