"Terror Bombing"

"Seventy years ago this week Nazi planes began a campaign of bombing civilian targets in London," reminds Zac Alstin, asking "Can we honestly say, 'never again'?" — Reaping the whirlwind. One wonders if the apologists for Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki realize they are defending a tactic initiated by the Luftwaffe?

From the cited article: "Nazi Germany adopted this tactic after failing to gain the air supremacy needed for a full scale invasion of Britain, and in retaliation for earlier limited bombings of German cities."

It has been my understanding that Germany did not initiate the bombing of cities/civilians.

That says a lot.

Not to excuse the bombings, but to identify the culprit that led to an ever more vicious cycle of tit for tat.

My understanding is that the British bombing of German civilians, and the subsequent retaliation came at a time when the sentiment in a very sizable part of the British Conservative party - and of course the Labour party which had always been more pacificist - was to stop the war and "contain" Hitler until his dictatorship collapsed.

Churchill, who rather liked being PM, knew that his being PM was contingent on a violent dispute with his German counterpart.
