"Nostalgia for the Depression"

"A craving for a simpler, slower, more centered life, one less consumed by the soul-emptying crush of getting and spending, runs deep within our culture right now," quotes Elena Maria Vidal — The Way We Live Now. Also quoted is this insight from the Council on Contemporary Families: “We know from the experience of the Great Depression of the 1930s that divorce rates can fall while family conflict and domestic violence rates rise.”

"Nostalgia for the Depression" ?

That title made me think of the opening monologue in Annie Hall, when Woody Allen's character says:

There's an old joke - um... two elderly women are at a Catskill mountain resort, and one of 'em says, "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible." The other one says, "Yeah, I know; and such small portions."
