Clueless Colonel

A report on a presentation at the Marines Corps University in Quantico, Virginia offered by Col. David Maxwell, who heads the Strategic Initiatives Group at the U.S. Army's Special Operations Command — N.Korean Regime Collapse 'Could Trigger Iraq-Style Insurgency'.

The colonel argues that "the North Korean people will not welcome the South Korean military, international forces or anybody outside of North Korea" and that an "insurgency could be based on the 'juche' or self-reliance doctrine to resist and try to overthrow occupation forces."

Knowing the Korean people, I don't see this happening. Juche (Ralph Waldo Emerson would be appalled) is a house of cards waiting to collapse. North Korea depends on foreign aid for its survival, and the people know this. I can't help but think this scare-mongering is a way of entangling us even further in this six-decade foreign entanglement that is Korea. And even if the colonel is right, what business is it of ours?

So were the Somalis. See "Blackhawk Down" for how that turned out.

Even if Maxwell is wrong, I think "clueless" is going too far. He might be exaggerating the danger, but after the Iraq "They'll Greet Us with Flowers" fiasco turned out, I think erring on the side of pessimism is a good thing. And moreover, it's good reason to want to stay out when the proverbial poop hits the fan --- I sure as hell don't want to clean up the mess the North Koreans created.

Okay, "clueless" was a bit overboard and if it keeps us out of another quagmire, more power to him.

Speaking of Somalia and Korea, you might like this article by one Yumi Kim -- Stateless in Somalia, and Loving It.
