Two on That Time Magazine Cover Girl

Jeff Huber argues that "the image and the story that accompanied it were as atrocious in a fundamental sense as the circumstances that led to the subject’s mutilation" — To Spite Our Faces — and Bretigne Shaffer notes that "[a]s if the implicit pitch for more war as a solution to violence against women did not provide enough cognitive dissonance, the woman pictured was actually disfigured by family members at the order of a Taliban official last year – eight years after US forces entered Afghanistan" — Saving Women and Preventing Genocide: The Real Reasons We’re in Afghanistan Now.

The Huber screed, like much of what is posted at antiwar.com, is nothing but an unhinged lunatic rant. There are a few valid points scattered hither and thither throughout, but most of it is utterly ridiculous. "A considerable portion of organized violence in America is carried out by fanatic religious groups, as also occurs in places like Afghanistan, although the violent religious fanatics in America tend to be Christian..." Srsly?

The Lew Rockwell article, unsurprisingly, is far more worthwhile.

Mr. Huber did overstate his case. Miss Shaffer's article is far better.
