"Tolerance" and "Diversity"

"Is this multi-cultural intolerance?" asks Randall Parker of this report from August State University — Christian Must Accept Homosexuality Or Get Kicked Out. "So these employees of the state of Georgia are trying to deny her an education in her chosen field due to her professed beliefs," writes Mr. Parker. "Why don't they celebrate her diversity?"

I have to take a somewhat different view on this. We have always believed in the right of free association, which means the rights even of professions to choose the type of people who will be a part of their ranks.

In the case of certified counselor in the secular realm, that means the selection of people who accept no code of ethics but call themselves ethical. In other words, the profession itself is, by nature, one exclusively for moral relativists.

If we are to allow people like pharmacists and doctors to abide by the traditional code of ethics, then we must allow the secular counselor profession to choose their own types of people. I would simply demand that they be open about what they of people they want - and don't want - so as to provide a red flag to folks who want to really help people to stay far away from their "profession" and its values.

Like "nature's warning signs" from the Far Side.
