St. Nicholas Belltower in Kalyazin, Tver Oblast

Bell Tower in Kalyazin

I stumbled across the above image this morning, amd more can be found here — 러시아 칼야친 마을 수중에 만들어진 수도원. A quick search tells us the tower "is part of the church flooded during the Stalinist era" — Kalyazin.

This is a very haunting image.

I once got to visit a church that had been "flooded" with lahar after a nearby volcano erupted. It was virtually cut in half, the bottom half never to be seen again until someone is willing to fund an archeological dig. My party entered through a door made in an opening that used to hold a stained glass window above the choir loft.

The church is still in use as a church, though they had to build a new altar and new tabernacle. It also now features a special room with old photographs of the original structure, donated by people who had been baptised, confirmed or married there.

It was a very unsettling and yet cathartic experience.
