Bye, Bye, Miss American Empire

An excerpt from the great Bill Kauffman's latest book of that title on "[n]eighborhood [p]atriots, [b]ackcountry [r]ebels, and their [u]nderdog [c]rusades to [r]edraw America’s [p]olitical [m]ap," arguing that "that cold-eyed death machine that ground American boys into fodder to spit out into the frozen Chosin of Korea, the rice paddies of Southeast Asia, the dunes of Mesopotamia, has run out of money, out of even the fig leaf of moral justification, out of any international sanction save the specious pule of the coerced and the fraudulent" — Wherein We Meet Genial Radicals by the Shores of Lake Champlain.

Again, the point to me that seems incontrovertible, and the one that people who support the idea of a less active military presence overseas, is not necessarily moral or cultural (although those points certainly have merit, I think) but purely economic. As everybody who talks about this but the most hardened neo-cons admits, there simply is no money for these adventures anymore. We are broke. Time to come home because there simply is no money to support global military activity anymore. There never really was to begin with, of course, but now, the credit card is close to maxed out and the cupboards are bare. Time to come home...

I just picked up this book at B&N yesterday. Of course, by rights, I should be able to call myself a citizen of Jefferson by now. -- dogbert
