Warmongering Chimps

They'll say this indicates how similar they are to us, by which they'll mean we're no better than them — Chimps kill each other for territory, study finds. Show me a chimpanzee peace activist and get back to me. Maybe then I'll listen to you about the glories of Bonobo sexual mores.

There are no Mohandas Karamchand Gandhis, no Dorothy Days, not even any Cindy Sheehans or Pat Buchanans among the brutes. "And God created man to his own image," we read in Book Of Genesis. "Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels: thou hast crowned him with glory and honour, and hast set him over the works of thy hands," we read in Epistle Of Saint Paul To The Hebrews.

Not so with chimps. If anything, this study shows us that the warmongers among us (not those who take up legitimate self-defense, mind you), have discarded their full human potential and are afflicted with what the Buddhists call Monkey Mind.

(On a related note, here's a previous post on review of a "brilliant new book [that] cuts through all the media-oriented research about ‘clever chimps’ using tools, doing maths and feeling emotions, and reminds us that, in truth, there is nothing remotely human about primates" — Restating the case for human uniqueness.)

Didn't Jane Goodall discover that about chimps 36 years ago?
