U-S-A! U-S-A!

"The cry of an Iraqi boy upon the arrival of American soldiers seems appropriate to note our national day of independence," writes M.Z. — Democracy, Whiskey, Sexy. Read his post about a country that "shamelessly has more people behind bars than any other nation including China," whose "scenes of 'Spring Break' shown around the world," that "brought the world Madonna," "where 25% of children are presently on food stamps," "where 37% of all births are paid for by Medicaid," "where 50% of adults cannot read a book at an 8th grade level," and "where 20% of adults are functionally illiterate, reading below a 5th grade level."

Not quite sure why you linked to this. M.Z. throws a lot of metaphorical turds on the table—including an entirely gratuitous dig at the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite—but nothing in the way of making things better.

Yes, M.Z., things are bad. Tell us something we don't know. And, while you're at it, try to refrain from disparaging the Mass that made two millennia of saints while you try to manufacture virtue out of your acceptance of a liturgy that has been transformed by our decadent culture, as opposed to the extraordinary form Mass that transformed culture.

Twenty years ago I chatted with a man from Ghana. He told me that the United States was Number One in everything--good and bad.
