I have no doubt they knew this would happen when they chose to use depleted uranium bombs.
Just like they know they will maim and kill untold scores of children for years to come with their cluster bombs.
Paul Likoudis wrote an excellent article on this in the October 28, 2004 Wanderer titled "The Morality of Weapons Systems," which sadly in no longer on line.
I posted about it at the time on my old blog -- The "Silent Genocide" of Depleted Uranium Weapons.
This is what you get when you make the military - which makes routinely makes life and death situations - into a social institution to get the lower middle class through college.
If you would stuff it with educated and well-mannered rich kids, it would have other problems, but an unlimited willingness to suck up and turn a blind eye to stupidities would not be near as high.

Lew Rockwell had an interesting article on this subject comparing V.M.I. to the Academies.
Just as rich kids are raised to take control and think for themselves, so likewise does V.M.I. do this on an institutional level with its two separate codes of conduct.
Just thinking about the lower middle class kids from my high school who signed up for service is a scary thought.
aetas parcet neminem.
I believe a few years ago , Jacob Hornberger of the Future of Freedom Foundation and a graduate of VMI, wrote an article contrasting officer candidate training between VMI and the academies. "Obedience to Orders" www.fff.org/comment/com0303u.asp
