Social Engineering and Particular Friendships

Rod Dreher asks, "Is there no natural social phenomenon that levelers and militant egalitarians won't seek to destroy to create their Utopia?" — Crackpot educators call best friends social evil. The report linked to claims that "the classic best-friend bond -- the two special pals who share secrets and exploits, who gravitate to each other on the playground and who head out the door together every day after school -- signals potential trouble for school officials intent on discouraging anything that hints of exclusivity, in part because of concerns about cliques and bullying."

Particular friendships are rightly dangerous in convents and monasteries, but not in the real world; this sounds a lot like Brave New World.

This is surprising because it is so contrary to human nature that it would not be expected even among the zealots and true believers. On the face of it, it does make perfect sense, but typically where faith in the unreal meets known reality, the faith in the unreal is ignored or at least not acted upon.

Of those who espouse one type or another of the philosophies or religions that deny the material world, none ever step in front of moving buses because they act on what they actually do know versus acting upon their faith in some unreal theory. But not here. The American faith in Equality, has sunk to a new low.

Only the gnostics would, and only as part of escaping the "evil" material world.

Though that was a ritualized death by starvation after receiving the consolamentum, known as the endura. Elena Maria Vidal has an article on the ritual here.

Also, the Christian Scientists are famous for their insistence on prayer rather than medical care due to their dualistic beliefs that regard material matter as illusory and evil. This has, at least according to Wikipedia (with religious concepts, they should be taken with a grain of salt), leads to some study results in a shorter lifespan and less health than other religious groups.

The endura as exception proves the rule.

It's also worth noting that christian scientist likewise never step in front of moving buses.

Even in orthodox monasteries good monks will almost always find one monk they are closest too; this is human nature.
