"It's All About the Children!"
The latest call rallying the troops against the Church is mentioned by a commenter to ex-Catholic (and anti-Catholic?) Rod Dreher's post justifying the events in Belgium — Why Belgian police raided the Church — decried in these stories, linked to by New Oxford Review:
- "The Vatican has stepped up its criticism of raids by Belgian police investigating alleged child sex abuse, calling the detention of priests 'serious and unbelievable'" — Vatican says Belgium raids 'worse than Communist era'.
- "Pope Benedict XVI criticised Sunday the 'regrettable methods' of Belgian police who raided a bishops' meeting as part of a paedophilia probe" — Pope criticises police methods in Belgium raid.
- "Fernand Keuleneer, lawyer for the Mechelen-Brussels archdiocese, said he had his 'doubts' over whether the authorities' actions on Thursday were legal" — Belgian church mulls legal action after paedophilia raids.
- "Peter Adriaenssens, a child psychiatrist who chaired the panel, said authorities betrayed the trust of nearly 500 victims who had made complaints over the past two months to the church panel and blamed state prosecutors for pursuing victims too traumatized to speak to police" — Belgium church panel on sex abuse shuts after raid.

"It's All About the Chilren . . rallying the troops against the Church"
Nice observation.
I read through a good number of the posts including the more interesting ones following the John Allen article linked to at the bottom of the Rod Dreher article.
I was surprised at the consistency of the hatred aimed at the Church while those who actually committed the sexual abuse where almost never mentioned.
Nice observation on your part as well: "I was surprised at the consistency of the hatred aimed at the Church while those who actually committed the sexual abuse where almost never mentioned."
Most Belgians believe that the Belgian establishment harbors nasty pedophile rings, that, in the past, were protected by the cops, and about which they will never know the truth. This is as prominent in their psyche as are doubts about Dallas in November 1963 amog Americans, if not more so.
Add to this that Belgium's recently retired Cardinal had been a Cardinal Mahoney on steroids, and a bishop who had been a close ally had just been exposed as a repeat pedophile, and I think the police were right to err on the side of caution, if that is what they did.
The Dutroux case is one of the most disturbing crime stories I've read. The same author also addressed the latest raids at BrusselsJournal.com.
I've read Alexandra Cohen's other piece. I almost cannot believe them. If they are true, the Church is really infiltrated by Satan.
Joshua,
In such cases, the abuse is not about sex, but rather about making oneself complicit in absolute evil, just as the mafia has aspirants "make their bones"; and this is what drove the more career-minded rings of abusers in the church.
