Rod Dreher Supports Extra-Judicial Execution
He's giddy over the news that suspected Somali pirates captured by the Russians "were 'set free' in a tiny inflatable raft, with no navigation equipment, 350 miles off the coast of Yemen" to die of thirst — How to deal with Somali pirates.

Good.
Marooning is a traditional method of dealing with pirates.
I'm all for traditional methods, but I wonder what international law says.
I give a thumbs-up to Obama last year, giving the SEALS the green light to kill those pirates who were holding that ship captain hostage. Releasing helpless prisoners to die of exposure in the open ocean is something else, though.
Eh, if the Russians are going to do it, I hope it will have a deterrent effect, at least.
Killing criminals when they are committing hostile acts is one thing; killing them after they've been captured and subdued is quite another.
"killing them after they've been captured and subdued is quite another."
This would be true if the crime being committed wasn't a capital crime.
Marooning is a form of capital punishment, with capital punishment falling under the category of self defense where death is the proper form of punishment.
I'd agree with you if it is true that captains have the right to judge and sentence in capital cases. It seems they once did, from what I remember of Columbus's voyages, but do they still today, and, if they don't, was the right taken away legitimately?
From what I've read of marooning, they used to give the marooned some food, water, and a loaded pistol should they choose to commit suicide. They last bit strikes me as aiding and abetting a grave, mortal sin, but I see the point. I remember the descriptions of Terri Schiavo's murder by dehydration were horrifying.
