A Celebrity Shotgun Marriage

"Actress Ko So-young revealed that she is three months pregnant, Thursday, ahead of her marriage next month to heartthrob Jang Dong-gun," reports Lee Hyo-won — Jang Dong-gun, Ko So-young Expecting Baby. "Jang Dong-gun and Ko So-young, as well as their parents and family, are extremely delighted about the pregnancy and are celebrating," according to Jang’s management agency, AM Entertainment. "They think it is the best wedding gift ahead of the ceremony."

Hats off the the couple! May many young Koreans follow their example and head to the wedding hall rather than the abortuary.

I think they announced the wedding only recently? I am thinking that the pregnancy did precipitate the wedding, but maybe I'm wrong about the time-line. If that is the case though, I was asking how much longer they would have postponed the marriage if she were not pregnant. Perhaps it is an opportunity to start with a "clean slate" so to speak...

It seems to me that the announcement was made less than three months ago, but I might be wrong. I remember some female students being quite upset at the news.

Yes, their engagement was announced in early March -- Jang Dong-gun and Ko So-young to announce engagement to fans. Their relationship was announced last November -- Jang Dong-gun, Ko So-young Admit Romance at Last.

So it is a shotgun wedding and not just a case of jumping the gun.

I have no problem with shotgun marriages, which are an age-old custom. What I don't like his new "engagement" custom in which couples propose to each other in a hotel and spend the weekend together.

I remember my aunt reporting that my cousin did such a thing and I was both shocked and embarrassed. Can't you at least pretend to save something for the honeymoon?

Of course, most people today would be scandalized by a shotgun wedding (Don't you know about abortion?) while seeing nothing wrong with making your proposal into a premarital sex-filled honeymoon.

Cohabitating before the marriage happens often here in the US, but I was a bit shocked that it is mentioned so casually in Korean entertainment news. Sadly, it has been the norm for Hong Kong celebs for a while. I couldn't tell from recent news if our two stars will be doing the same--apparently they have a new house already and are buying furniture for it or something.

To be honest, it's common here in Korea now. This country has changed a lot in the 13 years since I arrived.

Well, I still think that when it comes marriage, one should follow the right route. Marry first then, have a baby. Why? Because people will be HAPPIER for you if you do it this way.

If you don't want to hear side-comments like "shotgun marriage" or anything negative to that effect (because you just can't avoid it even if we're all liberalized) then, take the responsibility to make it clean. Don't do anything that make people stuff like this.
