Turkey's Crypto-Jewish Elite

Steve Sailor on "the descendants of followers of the Jewish False Messiah of the 1660s, Sabbatai Zevi (spellings vary), who after Zevi's apostasy, had publicly converted to Islam but had continued to worship Zevi, and remained a small, relatively endogamous elite who played key roles in Turkish revolutions and subsequent life" — "The Dönme: Jewish Converts, Muslim Revolutionaries, and Secular Turks".

"Perhaps a certain amount of the former neocon ardor for Turkey as the Good Muslim Country, which was so rudely interrupted in early 2003 when the Turkish parliament voted to not allow the U.S. to use its big base in Turkey to invade Iraq, much to the surprise and dismay of Paul Wolfowitz, had to do with Americans and Israelis being used to dealing with Turkish diplomats with many of whom they felt culturally compatible."

This is what believers in the Black Legend tend to forget; the Spanish Inquisition was concerned not so much with persecuting unbaptized Jews (over whom the Inquisition had no jurisdiction anyway, and whom the secular state and the mobs had already persecuted quite vigorously), but with the persistence of Crypto-Judaism and Crypto-Islam among ostensible Christians, many of whom were obtaining powerful positions in the Church and state.

Very true, and ignored by those who make the ridiculous charge that the Inquisition was anti-semitic.

My friend Professor Robert Hayward, distinguished scholar of Judaism and organist of the "anti-Semitic" Lefebvrists' church in a very Jewish area of Gateshead, maintains that Sabbateanism was one of the most important phenomena in the history of the world. I think that he is right.

It is not "anti-Semitic" to think it fascinating, important, worth exploring and worth making known how many Jewish or Jew-ish people, not least of Sabbatean descent, occupy key position in intellctual, economic, social, cultural and political history right down the present day, and how far the unfolding of that history has been and is shaped by ideas, attitudes and practices that were or are defined by or derived from Judaism or Jewishness, not least including both the content and the consequences of Sabbateanism.

Rather, the failure to do so bespeaks a reprehensible lack of intellectual curiosity, and a wilful blindness to the presence and importance of Jews that is the real anti-Semitism.
