Child Laundering

Don't ask, don't tell, better yet, don't adopt — Adoptive families' quests to trace Chinese roots often meet dead ends. There are reasons those ends are dead, and they ain't pretty.

"When he returned, he said, he asked his wife: "Where's our baby?"

"It was another girl, and I threw her away," his wife replied, according to Butler's account."

Is this due to a lack of love of children? Undue stress on boys? What it does do is help explain in a small way the selling of daughters into white slavery.

You might start with the strain of China's One Child Policy. Better for the extra girls to be "orphans" and be part of a Western family than be dead. Especially if you can make some money on the side from it.

That also explains why the ends are dead. And Joshua's right; they aren't pretty.
