Whither Minor League Baseball?
"For decades, minor-league rosters seemed the essence of the American heartland," reports Tom Piatak, quoting the WSJ — Our National Pastime? "But thanks to growing numbers of foreign players . . . the minors are fast turning into a veritable United Nations." Blame lies on a law signed by the previous president with "a name only George Orwell could love, the Creating Opportunities for Minor League Professionals, Entertainers and Teams Act."
Bill Kauffman would be appalled. I had hoped upon moving back to America to become a Minor League Baseball fan; it looks like I'll have to settle for Little League. There's always NCAA College Football.
(In Malaysia, I was friends with an elderly English gentleman who longed for the days when a city's football club consisted of the best local players. Nowadays, a given player can be from anywhere in the world.)
