Despicable Atheism

OhmyNews International's Mr. Nicolas van der Leek attempts to answer "[w]hy the godless are despised" in Attacks on Atheism, building the standard straw men about religious wars and morality motivated by fear of punishment. He goes as far to dismiss the anti-Christianism of Hilter and the Atheism of Stalin, implicating instead the fact that they were born Catholic and Orthodox respectively.

Hitler, Stalin, Mao and their ilk were all fulfillments of the Dostoyevskian prophecy, "Without God, all is permissible." State Atheism leads to gas chambers and gulags.

The number of Christians alone killed by Atheists in the 20th Century far exceeds the death toll in all the religious wars of world history: 32,000,000 Christians Killed by Atheists. Add to that number the tens of millions of others of different faiths or political persussions and you get an idea of why people should be very wary of Atheism.

These words written over three hundred years ago explain why in order to preserve Civilization, there should be no toleration of Atheism:
Lastly, those are not all to be tolerated who deny the being of God. Promises, covenants, and oaths, which are the bonds of human society, can have no hold upon an atheist. The taking away of God, though but even in thought, dissolves all; besides also, those that by their atheism undermine and destroy all religion, can have no pretence of religion whereupon to challenge the privilege of toleration. (John Locke, Treatise of Civil Government and A Letter Concerning Toleration
On the personal level, Atheism acts as a crutch. It gives folks a prepackaged worldview, and saves them from having to think for themselves or to seek answers to or even ask life's difficult questions. Atheism is the opiate of the egotistical.

Why are Christians so violent??

A former Catholic priest has been jailed for 15 years for participating in Rwanda's 1994 genocide.

The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda convicted Father Athanase Seromba for ordering militiamen to burn down and then bulldoze a church where 2,000 ethnic Tutsis were hiding.

About 800,000 people died during the country's genocide.

According to the charge sheet, the militia "attacked with traditional arms and poured fuel through the roof of the church, while gendarmes and communal police launched grenades and killed the refugees".

Seromba then ordered the church be demolished, the document said.

Guilty of genocide

"The chamber finds you guilty of genocide and extermination and sentences you to a single term of 15 years in prison," Andresia Vaz, the chief judge, said, reading the verdict of the three-member panel.

Seromba will only serve about 11 years because he has already spent four years in jail while on trial.

He was acquitted on lesser counts of complicity to commit genocide and incitement to commit genocide, the court said.

The former priest, the 27th person to be convicted by the court, had denied the charges claiming he was a simple parish priest and powerless to stop the killing.

Thousands of Rwandans have turned away from Catholicism after learning of the complicity of church officials in the genocide.

Priests, nuns and parishioners were all implicated in the killings, and some churches became sites of notorious massacres.

100 days of slaughter

Last month, the tribunal sentenced a Catholic nun to 30 years in jail for helping militias kill hundreds of people hiding in a hospital.

In 2001, two Catholic nuns were convicted by a Belgian court of aiding and abetting the murders.

Rwanda's genocide began hours after a plane carrying President Juvenal Habyarimana was shot down as it approached the capital, Kigali, in April 1994.

The slaughter ended after 100 days when forces led by Paul Kagame, the current president, forced the Hutu government out of power.

About 63,000 genocide suspects are detained in Rwanda, and justice authorities say that at least 761,000 people should stand trial for their role in the slaughter.

The suspects represent 9.2 per cent of Rwanda's estimated 8.2 million people.

The UN tribunal in Tanzania is only trying those accused of masterminding the genocide.

Your post is narrow-minded and baseless for a number of reasons:

1) Atheism is a crutch? How is it a crutch among Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, or Scientology? All of those religions tell you who you are, how to act, what your purpose is in life, and how everything will end. Atheism is simply the absence of belief in any gods or deities. It is certainly not a "prepackaged worldview" as you ignorantly call it, but simply one factor among many that shape someone's perceptions of the universe.

2) You quote John Locke as if he's the ultimate authority on the matter, without even supporting or backing up his claims. Locke claims that, "promises, covenants, and oaths, which are the bonds of human society, can have no hold upon an atheist." Yet you offer no evidence to support that promises, covenants, and oaths are the bonds of society nor do you support the claim that they hold no significance to an atheist. Certainly, it holds significance to an atheist who is a Buddhist or a member of the Ethical Culture Movement.

3) Everything you have said here is so commonplace. I could maybe consider your claims if they were original or interesting. Instead, you parrot the same blowhards like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, and once again without anything to back up your (their) claims.

4) Here's a quote for you to think about: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." That's from Matthew 22:36-40, in case you forgot. Hate does not effectively promote your message, nor is it endorsed within the New Testament.

5) Even if what you say is true, and atheists are the demons that you make them out to be, what good could possibly come out of intolerance towards them? If Dr. King had preached the same message as you are against whites, would that have helped his cause? When the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published the provocative cartoons making fun of Mohammed, did the Muslims improve their image when they rioted and burned embassies in the name of their prophet? Instead of preaching bigotry and hate against atheists, why not engage a few of them in discussion to break down prejudices and exchange ideas? I assure you, you would be doing more service to the world than the pro-intolerance stance that you are exuding right now.

What total nonsense Andreas. Your mind, or what is left of it, has been distorted by religion. Stalin murdered the old Bolsheviks before he started on his terror trials in the 1930s. Stalin did not murder people because he was an atheist-he murdered people because of his insane paranoia. In fairness to the Russian people-the paranoia was also not helped by the intervention, in Russias internal affairs by Britain, France and the United in support of the murderous Tsarist Regime. Hitlers Nazi regime murdered millions of Jews, Russians, Slavs, Liberals, Socialists and Communists, not because of his alleged atheism, but, because of his, and the Nazis insane racism, Mr Andreas seems to ignore the fact that the Nazis claimed that God was on their side. Andreas fails to mention the countless millions murdered by the Catholic inquisitions, which lanted until the mid 19th century. How many were people were killed during the Crusade wars? The religious killing is still going on. Christian imperialists Bush and Blair are responsible for the deaths of thousands in the Middle East and Iraq-all killed in the name of oil and God. Islam is recruiting millions because of the murderous imperialism of Bush and Blair. Islam promises the false solution of religious insanity-terror bombing. Religion is used as a form of social control by murderous reactionary regimes. Mr Andreas would be an active supporter of such regimes. Marx never said that region itself was an evil opiate-Marx comdemned its use as a form of social control by evil men to justify wholesale murder.
